Thermal imaging survey in Tokaj and the wine region

Tokaj gives its name to the Tokaj-Hegyalja wine region, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape. Much of the building stock here is wine-related: cellars, processing buildings, fermentation and bottling rooms, tasting rooms and guesthouses. In these spaces temperature, humidity and cooling energy affect both the wine and the costs.

Tokaj itself is small (about three and a half thousand inhabitants), but the surrounding wine region supports many wineries, processing sites and hospitality venues. Our survey here concentrates on the cellar and processing side and on the hospitality buildings.

The drive from Tiszavasvári is roughly 35 km by road, so there is usually no travel fee in Tokaj and the nearby wine villages; for the more distant wine-region villages the zone table applies.

Buildings in Tokaj: cellars, processing, hospitality

Cellars: stable temperature, but not defect-free

The value of a cellar is its fairly constant temperature. The camera helps where that stability breaks down: at the entrance portal and doors, where the building above meets the cellar, at the ceiling, at ventilation and dehumidification ducts, and on uninsulated pipe runs.

Our cellar module (HUF 45,000 + VAT per room, with a package) measures these rooms specifically. For wall moisture the camera gives only an indirect sign; where it matters, the report says so and recommends checking with another method.

Processing buildings, fermentation and bottling rooms

In more modern wineries, tank-hall cooling, bottling-room heating and cold stores use the most energy. The walls between cooled and heated spaces, the doors and the insulation of cooling pipes show up well: a cooled pipe run with poor insulation appears as a cold patch, often with condensation.

The survey leaves the winemaking process untouched: we do not touch tanks or wine, only the envelope, doors and pipework.

Hospitality, tasting rooms, guesthouses

Tokaj is a popular tourist destination, so there are many tasting rooms, restaurants and guest rooms, often in older, thick-walled buildings that were renovated later. Typical findings are attic spaces, structural thermal bridges, windows and building services.

Because of guest traffic, we scan the outer areas and common rooms after opening hours.

Climate: Local climate and timing

For the cellar side it is not the heating season that matters but cooling and humidity; for outer building parts the heating season is the same as in the Nyíregyháza reference: roughly 4,500 hours a year fall below 12 °C. The Bodrog–Tisza valley can have its own local microclimate, so we always check the local forecast before a survey.

When to book

During the grape harvest and processing, wineries are busy, so we schedule cellar and cooling measurements outside the processing peaks. The cellar module can be done all year round; the exterior facade and roof are measured in the heating season, October to March.

If a winery also has a heated hospitality or office section, we measure both during the same visit and deliver one report.

Do you go into the cellar?
Yes, we measure the interior surfaces of the cellar as well. In narrow, damp or uneven spaces we follow the cellar owner’s safety rules and agree on access beforehand.
What does travel to Tokaj cost?
Roughly 35 km by road from Tiszavasvári: that is travel zone 1, with no travel fee. For the more distant wine villages (for example Mád, Tállya) the zone 2 fee applies; we calculate it for the exact address in the quote.
What does the camera see at a winery, and what not?
It shows surface temperature: thermal bridges, air leakage, missing insulation, the cold sections of cooled pipes. It does not directly measure moisture inside a wall or the temperature of the wine, and it does not assess the winemaking technology.
