Entrance, roof, refrigeration: where does your store lose heat?

In a supermarket heating, ventilation and refrigeration have to be looked at together: waste heat from the display cabinets helps heat the store, while the entrance exchanges air all day. A night-time thermal survey shows what each defect costs per season and what to fix first.

01 / The situation

Where do problems usually sit?

  • 01

    Entrance and air curtain

Thousands of people walk in. An under-performing air curtain, or a vestibule inner door left open, causes the largest single air exchange, and customers feel it.

  • 02

    Flat roof

Wet flat-roof insulation loads cooling in summer and heating in winter. The cause of a leak is rarely visible from above, but it often shows on a thermal image.

  • 03

    Refrigeration and heating together

Waste heat from cabinets and the plant room reduces heating demand, so the value of a defect can only be estimated knowing the whole system.

02 / What we typically find

What we typically find

Typical items in this type of facility. Which of them exist in your building is what the survey shows: we do not promise defects.

  • Entrance air curtain, vestibule

Weak airflow, poor setting, an inner door left open. Often cheap to fix, quick to pay back.

  • Rear dock door

Missing bottom seal, perimeter gap on the delivery side.

  • Shopfront-to-wall junction

Open joints where the glazing meets the solid wall.

  • Wet flat roof

Wet insulation patches near drains and roof penetrations.

  • Parapet, thermal bridges

A thermal bridge along the roof edge that conducts heat out over a long run.

  • Plant room, pipework

Missing pipe insulation, condenser and plant-room surroundings. Here we typically give qualitative observations, not exact figures.

03 / Worked example

Example, October 2026 prices Estimate

The example: Supermarket / retail unit. 50 x 36 m (1,500 m2 sales + 300 m2 back room), 5 m high, 20 C, condensing gas boiler + AHU with heat recovery, vestibule entrance with air curtain, 1 rear dock door. Refrigeration waste heat enters only through the lower 12 C balance temperature. Medium case: Dock-door and staff-door seals faulty, entrance air curtain under-performing, 24 m of shopfront-to-wall junction open, 45 m2 wet flat roof, 40 m parapet thermal bridge.

A Entrance air curtain under-performing (residual 0.28 -> 0.60) ≈ HUF 170,000/season ≈ HUF 45,000 ≈3 mo
A Shopfront-to-wall junction open (24 m x 3 mm) ≈ HUF 150,000/season ≈ HUF 110,000 ≈9 mo
A Rear dock door: perimeter seals (10.7 m x 6 mm) ≈ HUF 65,000/season ≈ HUF 90,000 ≈17 mo
A Staff door threshold / side gap (5 m x 4 mm) ≈ HUF 19,000/season ≈ HUF 30,000 ≈19 mo

Heating cost of the fault-free baseline: ≈ HUF 7,400,000/season; the defects of the medium case add 9.3%.

Energy price basis: Hungarian business gas, net, 9 October 2026: central 40.4 Ft/kWh, range 32.1–56.9 Ft/kWh. The forward curve implies lower prices in the following years.

Our recommendation

What fits a store?

For a 1,500–2,500 m² store the 3D package gives the most: roof, entrance and rear side in one model, item by item in HUF. For chains we give 10% off for three or more sites.

  • Cold store / cellar module: HUF 45,000 + VAT per room (up to 300 m²)
  • Electrical cabinet screening: HUF 12,000 per cabinet with a package

What we ask in return

  • Written consent to an anonymised case study (sector, size band, region; no name, logo or address). You approve the final text.
  • A 30-minute feedback interview, and a follow-up call after six months on which fixes were done.

Same scope and quality as a list-price order. The price does not depend on what you say in the feedback.

05 / How it works

Three steps from quote to fix list

  1. Step 1: Briefing and quote

We ask about size, heating or cooling system and energy price. You get a fixed written quote.

    1 working day

  2. Step 2: Night-time survey

We survey at night after closing. Entrance and roof images are taken from outside; for the interior and plant room the store manager accompanies us.

    on site

  3. Step 3: Report and walkthrough

PDF report: for each item the location, likely cause, estimated loss with a range, fix suggestion and priority. Raw files and a walkthrough.

    10 working days

06 / Common questions

What people usually ask

Will it disturb trading?
No. The survey is done at night after closing; the interior needs a short walk-round.
I have several stores. Is one report enough?
Each site gets its own report, and defects are comparable between sites. For three or more sites we give 10% off.
Does this replace an energy performance certificate?
No. That is a statutory document issued by a person authorised to do so. Our survey provides something else: the location and the HUF value of the loss.

07 / Honest limits

What we do not do

  • We do not rate refrigeration energy use or cabinet efficiency; we flag only visible thermal differences.
  • The cause of a leak cannot be determined from a thermal image alone; we recommend a check before repair.
  • Savings materialise only after the fixes are done; we do not guarantee them.

08 / Get a quote

Request a quote for this type of facility

Tell us the type, location and approximate size of the facility. We reply by the next working day at the latest. The request is for business purposes: we serve companies and organisations.

E.g. what the issue is (high bills, draughts, damp …) and when a survey would suit you.

Condition: written consent to an anonymised case study and a short feedback conversation.
